  The Five Factors for Becoming a Thought Leader

What does it mean to become a "thought leader"? What separates regular entrepreneurs and business owners from "thought leadership"? It's interesting, but becoming a leader actually means finding followers. Once you are able to convince people to follow you, however you can, you have become a thought leader. But that's not easy for everyone. Often, it requires intense executive coaching, or a leadership coaching system. But it also requires some specific skills.


1. Being Able to Communicate Clearly


Whether you can launch into an extemporaneous speech, or you simply like to write lengthy, thought-provoking articles, it's important that you be able to organize your ideas and communicate them clearly. People cannot follow a thought leader who can't organize their thoughts, and it's often necessary to be clear rather than eloquent. You want your words to be powerful, concise, and easily understood. If you're not the type of person who can think on their feet, that only means that you need to spend more time preparing and practicing.


2. Confidence and Clarity of Purpose


Apart from being able to communicate, you also need to have confidence and clarity within your vision. Know exactly what you're trying to do, and focus on it to the fullest extent. Too often, people get confused about their core message, or they are trying to accomplish too many things at once. Focus down to one or two things you really know well. Once you have established yourself as an expert within those areas, then you can begin to branch out without fear of diluting your brand.


3. Connections with the Industry


As mentioned, to be a thought leader, you have to lead. And this often means forging connections within your industry. You need to be able to relate directly to your peers and even better, and you should be able to elevate yourself through those relationships. The more you know, the more you'll be able to find out more about your industry, develop more compelling ideas, and figure out the marketing temperature.


4. Persistence and Consistency


You need to keep at it if you're going to be a thought leader. Many people who later became thought leaders had actually been working for many years beforehand. Everyone gets their big "break" eventually, but it depends on luck when you're going to be noticed. You need to be poised to capitalize on this attention when it happens, but the only way you can ensure that it does happen is by being consistent. Sometimes, the person who gets the job is the person who shows up every day, rather than the person who has the most momentous idea.


5. Respect and Acknowledgement


One of the easiest ways someone can develop their reputation is by respecting and acknowledging those who came before them. Everyone knows that a thought leader did not come up with all their own ideas. They don't expect them to. But they want to see a thought leader thanking those who did help them on their way, and citing the ideas that they have grown from. In doing so, you show that you're truly enmeshed within your field, that you've been influenced by great people who worked before you, and that you have solid backing for your own claims.
